I come from a different denominational background than Paul, but "orthodox Christianity," Roman Catholic, Protestants, and Orthodox all agree with The Nicene Creed.  These Translations seem under the anathema of The Nicene Creed, and the way they have translated this verse should be rejected by Christians. The Lockman Foundation translates the verse in the NASB Updated version the same way you mention they did in the Amplified, "...only begotten God." Torrey she was not a christian because God did not answer her prayers.  R.A. Torrey then showed her the Scripture found in 1 John 3:22: "And whatsoever we ask we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight."
