I neglected above to state the specific reason why this translation of John 1:18 has been offensive to me. The reason can be summed up by the following parts of the original version of The Nicene Creed found in the book, "Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History:"

"...the only begotten of the Father, that is, of the substance of the Father; God of God, light of light, true God of true God; begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, by whom all things were made...But the hold catholic and apostolic Church of God anathematizes those who affirm that there was a time when the Son was not, or that he was not before he was begotten, or that he was made of things not existing: or who say that the Son of God was of any other substance or essence, or created, or liable to change or conversion."

I come from a different denominational background than Paul, but "orthodox Christianity," Roman Catholic, Protestants, and Orthodox all agree with The Nicene Creed. These Translations seem under the anathema of The Nicene Creed, and the way they have translated this verse should be rejected by Christians.

Another major Bible Translation should be noted that they have used the terminology, "The only begotten Son."
The NKJV: "No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him."
The Lockman Foundation translates the verse in the NASB Updated version the same way you mention they did in the Amplified, "...only begotten God."
I use more than one Translation. In saying that I use more that one Translation, I find the Translation of this verse to be more offensive than 1 John 5:6-8, and the Translators making a footnote on the last part of Mark 16. I find the way these Bible Translators have translated this verse the way they do to be as disturbing as adding words, such NIV's "homosexual offender." God watches, they will be accountable.

Thank you for this song this morning! My mom used to sing it while playing the piano.
While reading the Scripture you wrote, and the song, I was reminded of a story and Scripture that R.A. Torrey wrote about in his classic book, "How to Pray."
http://www.biblebb.com/files/prayer-torrey.htmIt is found in Chapter 3, a woman told R.A. Torrey she was not a christian because God did not answer her prayers. R.A. Torrey then showed her the Scripture found in 1 John 3:22:
"And whatsoever we ask we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight."
Trust and Obey is not an option to be a Christian, rather a requirement that happens if you are a Christian.
