Was Saul Saved?

April 3rd, 2011; By: Paul Tags: , ,
Posted in Audio, Doctrinal | No Comments »

This is the lesson given in the second half Sunday night service about the indwelling of the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost. However, in addressing this, the issue of Saul must also be addressed. This lesson focuses on Saul and what the LORD God did with Saul as pertaining to the statement:

And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. (1 Samuel 10:6)

Which gives rise to the question:

Was Saul saved?

I pray it is profitable  for you.

Opposing Views

A Wednesday night lesson (preaching?) on the kingdom of Heaven centering on the ministry of John the Baptist. There is an incredible difference between the way the LORD God sees things and the way man sees things. This is highlighted by the passage which states:

And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. (Luke 16:15)

Even so, there is an incredible difference between the way man views John the Baptist and the way the LORD knows him to be.

Additionally, I have included a picture of the board notes below in case it might be helpful in understanding the lesson.

I pray it is profitable  for you.

The Unforgivable Sin

February 13th, 2011; By: Paul Tags: ,
Posted in Audio, Doctrinal | No Comments »

Since it is brought up in Scripture there are times when the question is raised: Can one commit the unforgivable (or unpardonable) sin? Is what is mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew still applicable today?

That is explored and analyzed in the following message. May it be profitable for you.

Sickening

February 5th, 2011; By: Paul Tags: ,

Some things are just utterly sickening to find out about. The story in Bangladesh’s The Daily Star, dated Thursday, Feb. 3rd, 2011 is one of those sickening stories you pray you never hear about, let alone have happen anywhere near you.

What happened? Well, the gist is that a terrible crime was committed against a fourteen (14) year old girl – and then horribly compounded by the followers of a sick, twisted, demented religious system.

In brief, the fourteen year old was raped by a 40 year old cousin. This was bad enough. However, lest we forget, or are ignorant, in Islam, if a woman is raped – it is automatically her fault – and rape carries the same penalty as adultery – death (or 100 lashes if you are not married). Now, you can argue that 100 lashes does not constitute a death sentence, but let’s see you take the 100 lashes given by a strong man using a cane. If you are not dead when he is done, it will be a miracle.

So, the local religious leader promptly issued a fatwa calling for 100 lashes for the 14 year old (and nothing of note for the 40 year old), which was then carried out by persons in the village. The young girl died after 80 lashes.

Now precisely what did the young girl do wrong? We can ask lots of questions as to why the LORD allowed this. But perhaps we would be better served asking the question as to why such a religious system is allowed to continue unchecked and unhindered? Regardless of where it is in the world, Islam is Islam, meaning that Islam remains the same, no matter where or when we find it.

Hence, understand these things about Islam, as they are indisputable tenets of that religion:

  • The woman is always to blame.
  • Women are little better than property.
  • If you do not agree with Islam, you are a blasphemer subject to be put to death.
  • Living peacefully with Islam means being converted to Islam.
  • Pedophilia is okay. Rape is okay. Having a mistress is okay. Having more than one wife is okay… just DO NOT blaspheme Muhammad.

Now, there are those who will rush to the defense of Islam and swear up and down that these things are not true. . .

However. . .

Tell that to those who have been (and are still) being forced to convert to Islam under pain of death.

Tell that to the little girls who are subject to forced circumcision.

Tell that to the women and girls who have died in innumerable “honor” killings.

Tell that to the innumerable Christians, Jews and other “infidels”1 who have been subject to systematic persecution, up to and including being put to death.

Tell that to the “dancing boys” of Afghanistan.

Tell that to the countless girls and women who have been raped by Muslim men who yell “Allah Akbar” while raping them.

And all of this sanctioned by the religious leaders of Islam.

You know, ordinarily we would call all the above criminal behavior, worthy of severe penalty, up to and including death.

Only, when it is done under the cover of Islam, we just shrug our shoulders and go on as if nothing happened.

At what point will we realize that a religion as destructive as Islam cannot be allowed the liberty to exist and flourish? You know, religions which require human sacrifice are illegal in America. Why can we not see that a 14 year old was sacrificed to satisfy a religious tenet?

And we are told that fundamental, Biblical Christianity is a religion of hate and meanness.

  1. Some are truly infidels, and some are perhaps not, but is that a reason to deprive them of life, liberty and property?

Ye Cannot Serve the LORD…

February 1st, 2011; By: Paul Tags: , , ,
Posted in Christian Conduct, Doctrinal | No Comments »

One of the least understood doctrines of our time is the doctrine of covenant, especially as it applies to the New Testament church. The reason for this is that covenants require dedication and a determination to hold fast – no matter the cost. In case one hasn’t noticed, the vast majority of Americans are allergic to long term commitment. Hence, it is no surprise that churches do not teach the ins and outs of entering into a covenant of service with the Lord Jesus Christ in His New Testament Church.

So we can understand the seriousness of entering into covenant with the LORD, we should look the Old Testament and how the LORD viewed covenant then, knowing that the LORD has not changed and the principles of covenant have not changed. To the end of understanding this, the following passage from Joshua is essential. It also happens to be the heart of message which was delivered at the Sunday morning service.

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good. And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. (Joshua 24:19-22)

Lest we misunderstand, the point Joshua makes is about vowing to serve, and then not following through.

This message is about the ramifications of a church not abiding in the covenant, in a rather significant way. May the message be profitable for you.

To What Country…?

January 24th, 2011; By: Paul Tags: , ,

One of the greatest battles any child of the LORD fights is the battle for their allegiance. The pull to allow allegiance to the nation one was born in to take precedence over the kingdom of God is quite strong. After all, it is natural to hold an allegiance to the land of one’s nativity. However, we are called to further the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ and place our service to Christ above ALL else.

This lesson examines that. May it be profitable for you.

Better To Not Vow…

January 23rd, 2011; By: Paul Tags: , ,

One of the least understood aspects of Christianity is church membership. Even among fundamental Baptists there is little more than a cursory understanding which often consists of believing that showing up and warming a pew regularly is fulfilling the covenant. However, the truth is much different. It is not well understood today that the LORD has never changed His view regarding covenants — especially those covenants where individuals vow to serve Him.

Because the modern day Christian lacks understanding of this issue, churches suffer greatly and have little influence in this society. Unfortunately, I do not expect the situation to change anytime soon. The following lesson is to at least take a step in the right direction.

May you find it profitable.

In Memory of Ethan Hardin

January 22nd, 2011; By: Paul Tags: ,
Posted in Memoriam | No Comments »

On January 7th, 2011, Ethan Hardin, Sgt. US Army, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Today, January 22nd, his body was laid to rest in Round Mountain Cemetery with full military honors. By all accounts, Ethan is a brother in Christ. He also was a member of Mission Boulevard Baptist Church, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

I know Ethan as I was at one time a member of Mission Boulevard, and studied under his father, Tom Hardin, who is a missionary of Mission Boulevard. I know it is never the desire of a father (or of any parent) to bury their child, so Ethan’s passing is a particular grief.

There are perhaps many things which could be explored as to why Ethan has passed on, but they are for a different time, and perhaps a different post. Most importantly, those things are for his family and his church to examine and seek the face of the LORD for answers. They do not belong to me.

We know, or should know, that the LORD never takes anyone before their time. Thus, knowing the LORD took Ethan at the young age of 25 should make us consider where we stand before the LORD, and seriously consider what He has called us to do. Nonetheless, should we falter in that, if we are the LORD’s we ought to know there is mercy and forgiveness with the LORD.

To remind us of that, and that we may remember Ethan Hardin (for I am certain Ethan now knows of the mercy, grace and forgiveness of the LORD firsthand), the following hymn is given.1

In Christ,
Paul W. Davis

  1. No, it is not Baptists singing it. I could not find any recording done by Baptists
